ZEIT ONLINE: Martin Kotynek is new Deputy Editor-in-Chief

ZEIT ONLINE, the news site of the major German weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT, has named Martin Kotynek as a new deputy editor-in-chief. He will focus on the strategic development of the site, which is currently visited by 6.6 million people per month.

Kotynek spent the last ten months as a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University in Silicon Valley. As a Fellow, he researched digital media strategies and learned about innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership in media.

Previously, Kotynek was an investigative editor at DIE ZEIT. For the parliamentary elections in 2013, he developed “ZEITmagazin Faktomat”, a digital experiment in collaborative fact-checking. Before joining DIE ZEIT, Kotynek served as a politics editor at the major daily paper “Sueddeutsche Zeitung”, where he also edited the news analysis section “topic of the day”.

“We’re very pleased that with Martin Kotynek we acquire a thought leader in digital journalism”, says Jochen Wegner, editor-in-chief of ZEIT ONLINE. “With his appointment to the leadership team of our newsroom we’re perfectly positioned to pursue strategies towards the deep changes of our industry.”
